Iconic Photo Of Big Basin

I will mostly post floral photos on this Medium account; however, an occasional landscape will also be featured. This is an ancient redwood grove in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The photo was taken before the lightning-caused wildfire that caused significant damage in California’s first state park.

California’s first state park remains closed because of the devastating CZU Lightning Complex fire sparked by multiple lightning strikes in August 2020.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park’s headquarters was destroyed, and some ancient redwoods were felled by the fire’s intensity.

The photo I have posted here shows an ancient redwood grove near park headquarters, but because the park is closed, I haven’t seen photos of this grove to see what damage occurred.

The road that you see in the photo is actually state Highway 236, which narrows to about one lane as it meanders through this part of the majestic park.

For me, it is an iconic photo of what Big Basin Redwoods State Park was before the fire. I have seen reports stating the damage to ancient redwoods was significant; however, again, I cannot verify that because I have not seen comprehensive video or photos parkwide.
